  4. Methods

その中で、共同研究者のJack Hughes(学生の頃から指導してもらっていた米国教授)とスカイプで議論する機会があった。

2020/07/09: Pre-submission inquiry

We are interested in your opinion of the suitability of our manuscript entitled “High-entropy iron-rich bubbles in Cassiopeia A revealed by the discovery of stable titanium", for publication in ... as a letter. The manuscript is almost ready (please see the attached pdf), and can be formally submitted in one-week time scale once we would receive a positive feedback from your side.

The explosion mechanism leading to core-collapse supernovae is a long-standing problem in astrophysics (e.g., Burrows 2000). Recent multi-dimensional simulations suggest that high-entropy buoyant bubbles trigger massive stars to explode, but the mechanism has never been confirmed directly by observation. Here we report the discovery of a high-entropy burning product, stable Ti (=48Ti) in deep stacked data taken with the Chandra X-Ray telescope, in the shocked high-velocity iron-rich ejecta of Cassiopeia A, which have not been robustly detected previously from any supernova remnants (i.e., from the postulated site for its production) to our knowledge. Our results observationally verify the existence of high-entropy and high-velocity bubbles that drove the supernova explosion.

The famous radioactive 44Ti has been widely used as a tool to investigate the mechanism of supernova explosions because of its sensitivity to the asymmetry in supernova explosions (e.g., Grebenev et al. 2012). However, the unexpected lack of correlation between 44Ti and iron X-ray emission has been puzzling (Grefenstette et al. 2014). Our results will not only solve this mystery, but also provide a new tool, stable titanium, analysis of which can provide us various information beyond what the previous study using 44Ti (and Fe) could tell. This allows us to extract key physical parameters around the convective supernova engine (e.g. entropy, neutronization), which was not possible previously. As a methodology, in the future it will play an important role in connecting observations and detailed supernova modeling.

Our finding is, in other words, the discovery of a “cosmic factory" of titanium in the vicinity of Earth. Most of the titanium that is often used in our daily lives (e.g., for electrical devices) is thought to be produced at the deep core of massive star’s explosion. However the moment when it was synthesized has never been captured. We discovered freshly synthesized (stable) titanium just 350 yrs ago. In addition, we revealed that the titanium factory was located in a supernova engine. Thus we have established a picture: the active supernova engine produces titanium bullets and penetrates the surface of the massive star with the bullets, causing the star to explode.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely

Toshiki Sato

In the light of their advice we have decided that we cannot offer to publish the manuscript in ..." Having said this, should future experimental data and theoretical analysis allow you to address these concerns we would be happy to look at a revised manuscript (unless, of course, something similar has by then been accepted at ... or appeared elsewhere)."

もう一人は、観測関係の人で、ハッキリと "I do not recommend this paper for publication in ..."

We would like to request reconsideration of our manuscript ``High-entropy iron-rich plumes in Cassiopeia A produced by neutrino-driven convection'' (MS 2020-07-13207) for publication as a letter in ... . On 21st August 2020, we received comments from two referees, along with a decision by the editors. Both referees agree that our work had the potential for wide interest (e.g., theorists/observers of SNe/SNRs and meteoritics). However, the major issues reported by referee \#1 made the editors decide that it should not be published in ... in its then current form. On the other hand, the Senior Editor said ``should future experimental data and theoretical analysis allow you to address these concerns we would be happy to look at a revised manuscript.'' We closely read all the referee comments and carefully planned additional analyses to address them. After three and a half months of dedicated additional analyses, we conclude that we have resolved the concerns of both referees and can provide more robust and exciting results using the current data set. We hasten to add that results similar to those in our revised manuscript have not appeared elsewhere. Therefore, we are requesting reconsideration.

In the following paragraphs, we summarize the reviewers’ comments and how we specifically addressed them. More details are available in the response to the referees and the revised manuscript.

Referee \#1 indicated two major concerns: (1) issues regarding the measurement (region selection, modeling of the continuum in the spectrum, treatment of observations over multiple epochs) and (2) failure to acknowledge prior work that had already directly mapped Cassiopeia A’s bubble-like morphology. In response to the first item, we added a new substantial analysis in the Methods section to support our results. We find that the region selection does not affect our result, the modeling of the continuum in the spectrum is robust, and the result does not change even if we use data from only a single epoch of observation (obviating all concerns about combining data sets from multiple epochs). Table 5 in the Methods section summarizes these investigations, clearly demonstrating the robustness of our measurement. As for the second item, we added a new discussion about the bubble-like morphology proposed by Milisavljevic \& Fesen (2015) in the main text. Also, we added a new section ``Previous studies of the ejecta distribution in Cassiopeia A” in the Methods section. This new section will help readers/reviewers to more easily understand the originality of our study and its connections to the existing body of knowledge on Cassiopeia A.

Referee \#2 was very positive about our work and concluded that our manuscript would be suitable for publication after some issues were addressed. Here the referee’s comments were mainly related to our nucleosynthesis calculations. This referee suggested that we investigate yields from a range of analytic trajectories exploring a somewhat wider parameter space. This was an important suggestion for us and has resulted in a more comprehensive study and some exciting findings. We studied the nucleosynthetic yields via parameter studies of the electron fraction, peak temperature and density for the thermodynamic trajectories taken from our 1D SN model as well as power-law evolution. These new nucleosynthesis calculations indicate that a proton-rich environment, which is theoretically thought to be realized in strongly neutrino-heated bubbles, is favorable to explain the observed Ti/Fe and Cr/Fe mass ratios in the Fe-rich plume. Thus, our result is the first observational verification of the existence of high-entropy ejecta plumes that trace their origin to the neutrino-driven rebounding shock wave in core collapse supernova. Our revised manuscript shows that the convective supernova engine powered by neutrino heating provides a consistent and acceptable interpretation of the supernova of Cassiopeia A.

While revising this manuscript, several theoretical papers on supernova (SN) explosion mechanisms were posted or published. As these papers show, theoretical study of the SN explosion mechanism is now getting to the heart of the matter, and thus observational constraints or, indeed, verification of this mechanism, are timely and significant. A very recent 3D core collapse explosion simulation (Bollig, Yadav, Kresse, et al. 2020, arXiv:2010.10506) succeeded in reproducing observed SN properties well, including the explosion energy. Until now, even simulations with successful explosions were unable to produce supernova that matched observations. We may already be on the verge of solving the long-standing problem of core collapse supernova. In our manuscript, we demonstrate that X-ray measurements of the composition of Fe-rich ejecta can probe local physical parameters (i.e., lepton fraction, peak temperature, peak density and so on) associated with the neutrino-driven SN engine. Currently, this is the only way to constrain these parameters in a SN explosion. In other words, our research could well be the next more important observational result probing the role of neutrinos in exploding massive stars after the detection of neutrinos from SN 1987A. In any event our revised work is an important step toward solving this important outstanding problem.

Sincerely

開いてみると "In the light of their advice I am delighted to say that we can in principle offer to publish it." 批判的だったレフェリーも "The thoroughness of the analysis is truly impressive and the paper as presented now is of very high merit.

"We are delighted to accept your manuscript entitled 'タイトル' for publication in ... . Thank you for choosing to publish your interesting work with us."

2021/03/19: proof

****Please upload the corrected file to the online system within two working days (Tuesday 23 March latest please).

2021/03/24: e-proof

1. まず、MES
